Background of the Study
Oral poetry has long been a powerful medium for political expression in Ijebu North-East, serving as a tool for social commentary, resistance, and community mobilization. Through rhythmic verses and metaphorical language, local poets articulate dissent, highlight social injustices, and inspire collective action. Historically, these performances have been integral to the political and cultural identity of the community. However, in an era dominated by mass media and digital communication, the role of oral poetry in political activism is evolving. Recent studies demonstrate that despite modern influences, traditional oral poetry remains relevant in stimulating political discourse and mobilizing grassroots movements (Akinyele, 2023; Balogun, 2024). This study examines how oral poetry continues to shape political activism and influence public opinion in Ijebu North-East (Ogun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its rich tradition, the role of oral poetry in political activism in Ijebu North-East is under-researched amid increasing media saturation and censorship. Modern communication channels are overshadowing traditional poetic forms, potentially diminishing their impact on political engagement and cultural identity. This gap in literature hinders an understanding of how oral poetry can effectively convey political messages and mobilize communities. The study aims to address this gap by evaluating the influence of oral poetry on political activism, assessing both its contemporary relevance and the challenges it faces.
