Background of the Study
Oral poetry has long been a powerful medium for political expression in Ijebu North-East, serving as a tool for social commentary, resistance, and community mobilization. Through rhythmic verses and metaphorical language, local poets articulate dissent, highlight social injustices, and inspire collective action. Historically, these performances have been integral to the political and cultural identity of the community. However, in an era dominated by mass media and digital communication, the role of oral poetry in political activism is evolving. Recent studies demonstrate that despite modern influences, traditional oral poetry remains relevant in stimulating political discourse and mobilizing grassroots movements (Akinyele, 2023; Balogun, 2024). This study examines how oral poetry continues to shape political activism and influence public opinion in Ijebu North-East (Ogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its rich tradition, the role of oral poetry in political activism in Ijebu North-East is under-researched amid increasing media saturation and censorship. Modern communication channels are overshadowing traditional poetic forms, potentially diminishing their impact on political engagement and cultural identity. This gap in literature hinders an understanding of how oral poetry can effectively convey political messages and mobilize communities. The study aims to address this gap by evaluating the influence of oral poetry on political activism, assessing both its contemporary relevance and the challenges it faces.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the role of oral poetry in political activism.
  2. To assess the impact of oral poetry on public political engagement in Ijebu North-East.
  3. To propose methods for sustaining oral poetic traditions in modern political discourse.

Research Questions:

  1. How does oral poetry contribute to political activism in Ijebu North-East?
  2. What impact does oral poetry have on political engagement among the local population?
  3. How can oral poetry be preserved and adapted to contemporary political contexts?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Oral poetry significantly influences political activism in Ijebu North-East.
  2. The use of oral poetry correlates with increased public political engagement.
  3. Preservation strategies can enhance the impact of oral poetry on political discourse.

Significance of the Study
This study underscores the vital role of oral poetry in shaping political activism, providing insights that can empower communities and enrich democratic participation. The findings will guide cultural preservation and political mobilization strategies, ensuring that traditional art forms continue to influence modern political dynamics (Akinyele, 2023; Balogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the role of oral poetry in political activism within Ijebu North-East Local Government, Ogun State, and does not consider other forms of political expression.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Oral Poetry: Traditional verbal art using rhythmic language to express ideas.
  2. Political Activism: Efforts aimed at promoting or opposing social or political change.
  3. Civic Engagement: Active participation of citizens in political and community activities.
